What is sodium benzoate?

Sodium benzoate is the sodium salt of benzoic acid, which occurs naturally in fruits - cranberries, apricots, apples, as well as in mushrooms, cinnamon, cloves and some dairy products (as a result of bacterial fermentation) and teas.

It is mainly used as a component of the preservation system (also in the food industry), also permitted in natural cosmetics. It is one of the cheapest preservatives ever.

It has antimicrobial effects, prevents the multiplication of bacteria, but does not kill them. It is also slightly antifungal, protects against fungi, molds and yeasts (in an acidic environment, i.e. pH 4.5 and below). It is therefore sensitive to the pH of the environment in which it is found. Depending on the pH, one of its properties is always preferred, so it can be considered an unstable but still functional substance.

It is not an allergen and can cause contact dermatitis only in very sensitive individuals.

What is Sodium Dehydroacetate?

Sodium dehydroacetate in Czech is an organic compound. It is the sodium salt of dehydroacetic acid and is prepared synthetically. It is in the form of a tasteless and odorless white powder. It is a very effective antimicrobial and preservative agent.

Even in very low concentrations, it prevents the growth and reproduction of microorganisms. It is used in a wide range of cosmetics and personal care products that protect against spoilage.

It is found in food products under the designation E266 and is used here for its antibacterial and antifungal effects.

What is Citric acid?

Citric acid occurs naturally in fruit juices (for example, lemon juice contains 5-8% citric acid; it can also be obtained from lime, raspberry, cranberry or beetroot). It is used in cosmetics in its crystalline form.
