Description
E325, Sodium lactate
Characteristics
-
Sodium lactic acid solution
- It is a sodium salt of lactic acid with a slightly salty taste, soluble in water.
- It is naturally produced in the skin and is also found in muscle tissue. It occurs naturally in the skin as part of the natural moisturizing factor (NMF), which is responsible for proper hydration and elasticity of the stratum corneum of the skin.
- It is produced by fermentation of sugars, for example, from corn or sugar beet. Does not contain milk protein. Therefore, it can also be used by people with a milk allergy or lactose intolerance.
- It has hydrophilic properties. It provides moisture (a natural humectant) and is therefore used as a substitute for glycerin in some formulations. It increases the moisture content in the skin by up to 84%. It increases the plasticity of our skin. It increases the moisture content in the skin and in products that are rinsed off. It may slightly contribute to reducing the "appearance of fine lines and wrinkles".
- When used in soaps, it increases their hardness. The soaps will then last longer.
- It has antimicrobial effects and is used in combination with other preservatives as a preservative (supports their effectiveness).
- It has light surface lightening effects.
-
It has antioxidant properties.
- This product has strong moisturizing properties and should be stored in an airtight container.
Dosage
- 1%-5%
- May cause irritation in individuals with extremely sensitive skin (very small percentage of cases). At concentrations used in cosmetic products, it is considered safe up to 10%, and products must be formulated to prevent increased sensitivity to the sun, or the instructions for use inform the daily use of sun protection (pH in final formulation 3.5 and higher). It can be used in salons up to 30% concentration (short use, thorough rinsing, sun protection, only by trained personnel and pH in the final formulation of 3.0 and above).
Use
- As an additive that minimizes the change in pH of a solution when an acid or base is added to the solution.
- Humectant - as an ingredient that increases the water content of the upper layers of the skin by drawing moisture from the surrounding air. As an ingredient that helps remove dead skin cells from the surface of the skin (Exfoliant). As an ingredient that softens and promotes exfoliation of the horny outer layer of the skin (keratolytic effect).
- Moisturizers, products for mature skin (anti-age), skin cleansers, conditioners, shampoos, soaps, lotions, hand creams, in the food industry (E325), in the pharmaceutical industry, etc.
Solubility
- It dissolves very well in water
