Characteristics

• Dry, irritated and sensitive skin often lacks ceramides and as a result the skin's protective barrier is disrupted. When this happens, the skin becomes sensitive to environmental factors, weather changes and irritants. Adding ceramides to the skin strengthens the skin barrier while preventing recurring symptoms such as transepidermal water loss.

• Glycosphingolipids are a type of glycolipid that is built on a ceramide lipid group. Ceramides make up about half of the lipids in the outermost layer of the epidermis or stratum corneum.

• Ceramides are classified as lipid molecules and are typically composed of fatty acids and sphingosine. Ceramides, present in high concentrations in cell membranes, are part of sphingomyelin, one of the main lipids of the lipid bilayer. Ceramides such as ceramide 3 are attributed to providing structural support to cells and improving cellular integrity and can be used in a wide variety of cosmetic and personal care applications.

• Ceramides are also thought to increase collagen production in fibroblasts when given in small doses. When the amount of ceramide is slightly increased, the extracellular matrix is homeostatically synthesized, increasing the amount of collagen. This increase in collagen production goes hand in hand with ceramides ability to increase cell turnover.

• Ceramide 3 is known for firming and protecting the skin against transepidermal water loss (TEWL), and it is thought that ceramide 3 may also help improve epidermal integrity while providing protection against photo damage, surfactants, stress and low humidity conditions. In hair care formulations, ceramide 3 has been shown to protect hair while improving shine and mechanical properties such as texture and combability.
